TCL Q6 QLED TV review: Pros and cons

If you’re considering purchasing a new television, you might have encountered the TCL Q6 QLED TV. This TV has been gaining traction among consumers due to its stylish design and remarkable features. However, is it truly deserving of the attention it’s receiving? In this evaluation, we will closely examine the TCL Q6 QLED TV to determine if it lives up to its esteemed reputation.

What is QLED?

Before we dive into the review, let’s first understand what QLED technology is. QLED stands for Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode, and it is a type of display technology that uses quantum dots to enhance the color and brightness of the TV. The use of quantum dots in QLED technology allows for a wider color gamut and improved color accuracy compared to conventional LED displays

The quantum dots can also produce intense light output, allowing QLED TVs to achieve high peak brightness levels, which are particularly beneficial for HDR (High Dynamic Range) content. This results in a more vibrant and lifelike picture quality.

Now that we have a better understanding of QLED technology, let’s take a closer look at the TCL Q6 QLED TV.

Design and Display

The TCL Q6 QLED TV features a sleek and modern design that adds a touch of elegance to any living space. The TV has a thin bezel design, meaning that the frame around the screen is minimal, allowing for a larger display area and a more immersive viewing experience. The slim bezel gives the TV a sleek and seamless appearance when it is turned on.

The TV’s slim profile further adds to its modern aesthetic. It is designed to be wall-mountable, allowing you to save space and achieve a clean and clutter-free look. Alternatively, you can also place it on a TV stand or entertainment center according to your preference.

The TCL Q6 is available in various sizes ranging from 55 to 85 inches, providing options to suit different room sizes and preferences.

Smart Features

The TCL Q6 is a smart TV that runs on Google TV. It gives you access to over 7000 apps, including popular streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+.

The TCL Q6 QLED TV comes with a small, user-friendly remote control. It has special buttons for popular streaming apps, making it easy to find your favorite content and improving your overall TV experience.

Its remote control has a microphone that lets you use voice commands with Google Assistant. This feature allows for convenient switching of inputs, searching within apps, and requesting weather updates, among other things.

The TCL Q6 QLED TV has built-in Chromecast for easy content casting from your phone. This feature lets you easily share and view phone content on the TV, perfect for group gatherings.

Nevertheless, it is important to mention that the TCL Q6’s performance may occasionally exhibit sluggishness. During our evaluation, we encountered delays and instances of waiting when transitioning between various apps, creating uncertainty around app responsiveness.

The built-in speakers of the TCL Q6 QLED TV offer satisfactory sound quality. Nevertheless, to achieve a more captivating audio experience, the TV is also equipped with DTS Virtual:X technology, which generates a virtual surround sound effect. This characteristic enriches the audio by simulating a wider and more immersive soundstage.

Nevertheless, as anticipated for a television in this price range, it lacks an extensive built-in audio system. The frequency response is average, and the bass performance is limited, resulting in a deficiency of deep and impactful low-frequency sounds.

If you turn the volume all the way up, the sound begins to distort. With lower volume, theTV delivers satisfactory sound quality with no harsh frequencies noticed. For individuals who value audio quality, external speakers or a soundbar system can provide a stronger and improved sound output.

Picture quality

Next, we will look at how good the picture is by checking things like the colors, how clear the picture is, and other important things.

Contrast and brightness

The TV boasts a direct LED backlight, which means that the LEDs are placed directly behind the screen, resulting in more precise and uniform lighting. This is an improvement over traditional LED TVs, which use edge-lit backlights that can cause uneven lighting and blooming.

The TV also supports Dolby Vision, which is a type of HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology that enhances the contrast and color of the display. This results in more realistic and lifelike images.

We were genuinely impressed by the picture quality of this TV, particularly given its relatively affordable price. When viewing films like “The Avengers: Endgame” and “Joker”, I was amazed by the sharpness and vibrancy of the colors displayed on the screen.

The contrast between dark and light scenes was well-maintained, resulting in a satisfactory viewing experience. Moreover, although the brightness was not exceptional, it effectively highlighted all the intricate details in every scene, making everything visually captivating.

In vivid mode, the TV achieves a peak brightness of 700 nits, in a 10% window, which is remarkable considering its price. However, in Movie Mode, which is the recommended setting, it can reach up to 500 nits, a reasonably good performance that slightly surpasses other QLED competitors like the Samsung Q60C.

Of course, it’s important to note that as a medium lower TV, there are some limitations to be expected. While blacks were deep overall, there were moments where shadow detail seemed slightly lacking compared to higher-end models.

As we have just mentioned, one of the main advantages of QLED technology is its color gamut. The TCL Q6 does not disappoint in this aspect, with a wide color gamut that covers around 93% of the DCI-P3 color space. This means that the TV can display a wider range of colors, resulting in more accurate and vibrant images.

The color accuracy of this TV is also noteworthy. From vibrant superhero costumes to moody cinematography in dramatic scenes, every color appeared true-to-life and richly saturated without being overbearing.

The picture processing of the TCL Q6 QLED TV is deemed satisfactory, though not outstanding. It doesn’t work well for keeping small details, especially with low-quality videos. The upscaled content may exhibit a slight lack of clarity and dark scenes may exhibit noticeable macro-blocking.

The image processor effectively manages 4K content, leading to a significant level of intricacy. Therefore, in our perspective, the TV performs well with high-quality content, but encounters challenges with low-quality content. This is an aspect where TCL has the potential for enhancement.

Refresh Rate and Motion Handling

The TCL Q6 has a native refresh rate of 60Hz, something that we might expect for this price. It eliminates judder when you watch movies or use apps or Blu-ray players at 24 fps and creates smooth movement. However, when it comes to 60Hz sources, the TCL Q6 is not able to properly remove judder. Judder refers to a slight stutter or jerkiness in motion that can be noticeable, particularly in content with a 60 frames per second refresh rate.

It has a motion interpolation feature, which inserts additional frames in between the original frames to create a smoother motion. However, this feature can sometimes result in the “soap opera effect”, where the images appear too smooth and unnatural. You can disable this option if you want to avoid this effect.

Gaming performance

The native refresh rate of TCL’s display is 60 Hz, but it can show up to 120 frames per second using Game Accelerator technology. This makes video games look smoother and more fluid.

The TV supports a dynamic simulation of 120 Hz and VRR but only up to 1440p. 120Hz. Competitive gamers who prioritize high refresh rates and engage in sports or shooting games will find this particularly advantageous.

Viewing Angle

One area where the TCL Q6 QLED TV falls short is its viewing angle. The TV’s angle for watching is not very good.

If there are many people sitting at different places around the TV, this might not be the best choice. When you view the TV from an angle, the colors may change and the brightness may become less.

Final Veredict

Overall, we were quite impressed with how well recent famous movies looked on the TCL Q6 QLED TV. Its combination of good contrast, brightness, color, and functionality make it a worthy choice for those looking for an affordable yet capable television for movie watching or everyday use.

The impressive color range, direct LED backlight, and satisfactory peak brightness contribute to an good visual experience. The inclusion of 120Hz refresh rate simulation and DTS Virtual:X further enhances the TV’s attractiveness, particularly for gamers and movie lovers.

While the TCL Q6 QLED TV offers a good picture quality, it does have some disadvantages in terms of picture processing and sound quality. The picture processing not perform well with lower-quality videos and it struggles with details and clarity. Upscaled content and dark scenes may lack clarity and show macro-blocking, affecting image quality.

In terms of sound, the built-in speakers of the TCL Q6 provide satisfactory sound quality, but the frequency response and the bass performance is limited, resulting in a lack of deep and impactful low-frequency sounds.

However, individuals in search of an affordable QLED TV can disregard the drawbacks of this TV due to its mentioned advantages and highly favorable price ratio, positioning it as an excellent choice.
