Samsung has already launched its new Neo QLED TVs for 2022 with Mini LED technology. These new models present some new features compared to the 2021 models. In this article, we will compare the performance of the new QN90B with last year’s QN90A.
Mini LED technology

Both the new Samsung QN90B and the 2021 QN90A feature Mini LED backlighting, which uses bulbs 40 times smaller than those normally used. These Mini LED bulbs are as small as a grain of sand and allow many more bulbs to be added, reaching up to 30,000 in the larger models.

With more bulbs, light control is more precise and this improves peak brightness and depth of black tones. In addition, a Local Dimming system is used to control the light independently in a specific number of zones. Both the 2022 Neo QLED QN90B model and last year’s QN90A feature 792 zone control on models 55″ and up and 572 on lower inch models.
QLED technology
To increase the color palette and achieve 100% color volume, the QN90B and QN90A models use a film filled with Quantum Dot nanoparticles. These nanoparticles are microscopic in size and depending on the size can change the color wavelength to create purer colors.

QLED TVs stand out for their more intense colors and 100% color volume, which allows color saturation to be maintained regardless of the brightness level. This is especially noticeable in HDR content.
In the QN90B and QN90A series the LED emits blue light and the red and green colors are created using a film with millions of these nanoparticles, so no color filters are used. This helps as we say to improve the color gamut and to improve the brightness level.

Gaming features Samsung QN90B vs QN90A

The new QN90B series introduces some improvements focused on the use with game consoles and PCs for gaming. One of the most important new features is that you can now play games at up to 144 Hz refresh rate on the new QN90B. This improves image smoothness and reduces motion blur. This feature is unfortunately only available in the 43-inch and 50-inch versions.

Both models feature HDMI 2.1, VRR via FreeSync Premium Pro, as well as ALLM and the Game Bar. This Game Bar has been updated this year and now version 2.0 introduces some new features.
In turn, now on the QN90B, all ports are HDMI 2.1, so if you have a PS5 or Xbox Series X you can play in 4K resolution and at 120 Hz. This way, fast movements look sharper and there is less blurring and ghosting.
Luminance scale
Another improvement included in the new QN90B Neo QLED 2021 series is the increase in the luminance scale. This scale measures the amount of dipsonible tones between the purest black and the most intense white. In the new QN90B, this scale is increased to 14 bits from 12 bits in last year’s model.
This means that there are now more intermediate steps, so that more gray tones can be reproduced, improving detail in shadows and highlights and avoiding loss of information in these areas.

Shape Adaptive
The new QN90B introduces a new function called Shape Adaptive that is able to change the light intensity according to the size and shape of objects. This is intended to make the illumination more precise and reduce the blooming effect, which is the halo effect around white objects when there is a dark background.
New picture processor
The imaging engine is renewed and is now called Neural Quantum Processor. The difference with the 2021 QN90A image engine is that more neural networks are now used. Last year 16 were used and now 20 are used.
Now the processor is a bit more powerful and can do a little better scaling, using more different formulas, based on the content being played.
Dolby Atmos sound
The sound system is the same in both models with a 4.2.2 channel system and an output power of 60W. In the 50″ sizes the system is more basic as it is 2.2 and 40W and in 43″ it is a 2.0 with 20W of power.
Both also include Object Tracking Sound+ (OTS Lite on 50″ and 43″), which analyzes the image and attempts to follow the path of objects in the scene as well as reproduce more direct sound. A new feature added to the QN90B is Voice Tracking, which optimizes sound by reviewing the position of people in the scene using artificial intelligence.
The big news in audio this year is that for the first time, Dolby Atmos support is included using the TV speakers directly. In the QN90A it was possible to output Dolby Atmos audio to a bar or Home Cinema via HDMI, but now, in the QN90B it can also be played on the TV without adding any external equipment.
If you buy a 2022 Samsung soundbar and the QN90B, you can now combine the audio using the Q-Symphony 2.0 feature and have all the speakers of the TV and the soundbar play. With the QN90A only the bottom tweeters sound, but with the QN90B all the TV speakers sound.
Design
The design in both cases, is quite slim with a thickness of only 2.69 cm, perfect for wall hanging. If you use Samsung’s official wall mount, the SlimFit, the distance it leaves to the wall is minimal.

The stand is center type in black and is made of metal not plastic and the edges around the screen are thin which overall gives a more premium appearance.
The controller in both cases is USB and sunlight rechargeable, but in the new QN90B the included controller can even be charged by absorbing the electromagnetic energy given off by household devices, such as a wireless router.
A new Disney Plus shortcut button has also been added.
