JBL Authentics 200 wireless speaker with a retro feel

The retro style is on trend and if you’re a fan of those designs that remind you of the products of the past, today we bring you a speaker that is sure to interest you.

We are talking about the Authentics 200 series from JBL, a model that bases its aesthetic line on the 70’s models of the brand.

But despite its vintage aesthetics, it is a speaker full of new technology. In our review, we will show you the most remarkable aspects of this loudspeaker and what are its strengths and areas for improvement.

Retro design that shines

The first thing you notice about this model is its retro design, inspired by the brand’s classic audio equipment. JBL unveiled its new Authentics a few months ago at the IFA in Berlin. There we saw live the three series that make up this range and the smallest of the family, this 200 series.

We are talking about a portable loudspeaker that, due to its size and weight, can be easily carried from one side of the house to the other.

The cabinet is made of aluminum on the edges. On the front there is a Quadrex grille that looks elegant and sophisticated. In addition, the body of the speaker is covered with leather, which perfectly complements the vintage style.

On the top of the speaker, there are a number of buttons that will help you change its settings. The buttons look good with the vintage styling of the speaker and light up in the dark. There are wheels that allow you to adjust the bass, treble, and volume levels.

The volume up or down button on the device also plays or pauses the music. You can press it repeatedly to skip to the next or previous track.

The speaker also has a button to connect via Bluetooth and another button labeled “Moment” with a heart icon for quick access to a playlist in the JBL One app.

On the other hand, if you want to mute the microphone, all you have to do is flip a switch on the back of the speaker.

Full connectivity

A key feature of any wireless speaker is the ability to easily connect to other devices without the need for wires. The JBL Authentics 200 offers several options in this regard, thanks to its built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies.

Via Bluetooth, it can be quickly paired with smartphones, tablets or other compatible mobile devices.

Wi-Fi connectivity, on the other hand, offers higher sound quality and a more stable, longer range connection. This is especially useful for streaming music from services like Spotify or Apple Music without interruption.

In addition, its compatibility with multiroom technology allows you to connect multiple JBL Authentics speakers in different rooms to enjoy surround sound throughout your home.

In terms of physical connections, there is an Ethernet port if you prefer to use a cable instead of Wi-Fi, an auxiliary input, a USB-C port and the power connector.

A big advantage is its ability to work simultaneously with the most popular virtual assistants – Alexa and Google Assistant.

This means you can control the speaker using voice and commands from each assistant. For example, you can ask Alexa to play a specific song or turn up the volume.

This means you can control your speaker by voice without even touching it – if you want to change the song, just ask your favorite virtual assistant!

Powerful sound performance

But the most important thing about any speaker is how it reproduces sound. And the JBL Authentics 200 delivers. With two 25mm tweeters, a powerful 5″ woofer and a 6″ passive radiator, it delivers clear and balanced sound.

To test this speaker, we decided to play the song “Michael Jackson – Who Is It”, which has a variety of sounds and strong bass. When we pressed the play button, we were pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. The JBL Authentics 200 managed to capture every detail of the sound with incredible clarity.

The highs are crisp and vibrant, allowing us to clearly hear the vocal nuances and subtle details in Michael Jackson’s performance.

At the same time, it can handle strong bass without distorting or overpowering the rest of the sound. When we hear the distinctive bass thump at the beginning of “Who Is It,” we feel a strong but controlled response even at high volumes.

However, in our opinion, it sounds a bit directional, and depending on the placement, it can reduce the quality quite a bit. The sound can often deteriorate if you are not in the ideal listening position.

A notable feature of the JBL Authentics 200 speaker is its 90 watts RMS power. Whether at low volume or when you crank it up to maximum, the sound quality will hardly be compromised. This is especially important if you are looking for an immersive experience at events or parties where you need the speaker to be able to fill the entire space without losing fidelity.

It also features automatic calibration that adjusts the audio according to the acoustic conditions of your room. This means that no matter whether you are listening to music in a small or large room, the speaker will automatically optimize the sound. Still it does not always make a setting that we are happy with and we always recommend adjusting the audio manually.

In any case, you must have the microphone turned on for it to work; turning it off will immediately disable the automatic tuning.

Either way, the microphone must be enabled for this to work, and disabling it immediately disables automatic tuning.

JBL surprised us with the launch of its Authentics series, with a design reminiscent of the brand’s old speakers. This Authentics 200 series is the smallest of the family, but it does not sacrifice performance.

It is a speaker that sounds really good, with enough power for a normal living room and good definition at all frequencies. The sound it reproduces is quite neutral and is a bit of a departure from the brand’s popular portable models, which tend to emphasize more bass.

We really liked the ability to customize the sound with the controls on the top. The only major drawback is that the sound is quite directional so you have to position yourself as far forward as possible to enjoy the optimum sound.

It does not have a battery like the 300 series, so it is intended for indoor use. It is also a bit heavy to carry it outdoors.

In short, if you are looking for a device with a lot of extras, with a retro look and offering quality sound, the Authentics 200 series is a highly recommended option.
